On April 26, I attended a free community art workshop at Pedrido Arte Gallery with my niece, Ilen Maria.

Led by artists Alejandro Pedrido and Ventura Gonzalez Padrosa, the workshop invited children from the Coral Gables community to step into a professional gallery space and create their own work. Located in the heart of Coral Gables, Pedrido Arte Gallery continues to create meaningful art experiences for local families.

For those who have not met Ilen Maria, she has been creating for as long as she could hold a crayon. At ten years old, she already knows she wants to be an artist, with a clarity that feels rare and deeply rooted.

A Creative Space in Coral Gables for Young Artists

From our very first visit, Ilen Maria felt at home inside the gallery. The space has quickly become a meaningful part of the Miracle Mile arts scene, offering a modern and welcoming environment for both artists and the local community.

Being surrounded by real canvases, finished works, and working artists gives children something important. It allows them to see themselves in that world.

The workshop, held from 1 to 3 pm, gave children the opportunity to paint alongside professional artists rather than simply observe. That shift, from being guided as a child to being treated as an artist, creates confidence.

Ilen Maria and the other kids felt that immediately.

Why Art Workshops Matter for Children

At home, Ilen Maria is the artist of the family. She fills sketchbooks, experiments with color, and approaches her work with intention. When she speaks about becoming an artist, it is not a distant idea. It already feels like part of her identity.

Experiences like this deepen that connection.

Not because children need permission to create, but because they benefit from being seen, supported, and taken seriously in a professional environment. These moments help shape how they view themselves and what they believe is possible.

In my work through children’s portrait sessions in Miami, I see how important it is for children to feel seen, understood, and free to express who they are.

Spaces like this reinforce that beautifully.

Supporting the Coral Gables Art Community

By the end of the workshop, the room was filled with finished canvases, proud children, and even parents who had joined in the process. It became more than an activity. It was a shared creative experience.

Spaces like Pedrido Arte Gallery play an important role in building a connected and creative community. They create opportunities not only for expression, but also for belonging.

Thank you to Alejandro Pedrido and Ventura Gonzalez Padrosa for creating this experience and for opening the doors to young artists in Coral Gables.

We will definitely be back.
