I just celebrated my 8th anniversary as a Miami professional portrait photographer at Odette Photo+Art. My artistic journey began in 2017, and today I specialize in personal branding and family portraits. I have also been doing dating photography for the past two years, and I love it.

My goal is always the same: to make every portrait experience meaningful, memorable, and deeply personal.

I’m constantly seeking new ways to grow as an artist and business owner, refine my craft, and elevate the experience I offer my clients. When I saw that PhotoWhoa was offering a masterclass by Teri Hofford, I immediately knew I had to take it.

Inclusivity, empathy, and representation are deeply important to me, and this course promised to elevate the client experience in a powerful, human, and transformative way.

Overview of Teri Hofford's Masterclass

I recently watched Teri Hofford’s Masterclass: Boudoir for Every Body on PhotoWhoa.

Teri Hofford is known in the industry as the body image educator, and for good reason.

I first heard about her years ago through Sue Bryce’s photography community, and since then, I’ve admired her work from afar. Teri is a photographer, author, TEDx speaker, and body image coach whose mission is to help photographers create inclusive, empowering experiences that celebrate every body.

Teri was originally a wedding and portrait photographer and transitioned into boudoir in 2014. Her work has evolved into education to help photographers challenge biases, shift their mindset, and build a more inclusive approach to photographing humans.

In this masterclass, she covers:

  • How to photograph and empower clients of every body type
  • How to handle client concerns with confidence and empathy
  • Posing for emotion rather than “flattering” angles
  • Real behind-the-scenes demonstrations with diverse models
  • Ten foundational poses applicable to every body
  • Scripts, PDFs, and templates to use with your own clients
  • How to build a portfolio and client experience that fosters confidence and representation

A core component of the course is Teri’s ACE Method, which stands for:

  • Awareness
  • Curiosity
  • Empowered Action

This framework is woven throughout the masterclass and serves as the foundation for every lesson.

Teri Hofford’s Teaching Style

Teri is incredibly engaging, warm, and easy to follow. She explains concepts clearly and with genuine intention, making you feel included and safe throughout the entire learning experience.

One of the most impactful parts of her teaching is how openly she talks about biases and body image, both our own and those we’ve absorbed from society. She gives language, tools, and perspective that help photographers build businesses rooted in empathy, inclusivity, and authenticity.

What I appreciated most is how she helps photographers reconnect with why we do this work in the first place: to see people, to honor them, and to celebrate them exactly as they are.

Video Quality & User Experience

The video and audio quality are excellent. The editing is seamless, making the masterclass engaging and easy to watch from beginning to end.

The PhotoWhoa platform is simple and intuitive, and everything is clearly organized, making taking the courses effortless.

Content Relevance & Depth

Even though I’m not a boudoir photographer, this course is fully relevant to portrait, brand, family, and commercial photographers alike.

The concepts Teri teaches: representation, empathy, inclusivity, boundaries, and client-centered posing, apply to every genre.

The masterclass reminded me of the importance of creating a space where everyone feels seen, accepted, and celebrated.

Her lessons can help any photographer:

  • Communicate more compassionately
  • Build safer, more welcoming sessions
  • Reduce client anxiety
  • Pose in ways that highlight emotion and story
  • Challenge traditional beauty standards
  • Create a more inclusive portfolio

It’s the kind of course that stays with you long after you watch it.

Uniqueness & Value

What makes this masterclass stand out is how it blends mindset, psychology, empathy, posing, and storytelling. It’s not just about how to photograph someone; it’s about how to fully support them before, during, and after the session.

The ACE Method in Action

Awareness:

Teri encourages photographers to audit every part of their business:

  • The bodies they show in their portfolio
  • The images they choose as their “best”
  • Their own beliefs about beauty
  • Their editing choices
  • The educators they learn from

Curiosity:

She invites us to ask deeper questions:

  • What self-talk influences my decisions?
  • Why do I pose or edit the way I do?
  • Do my images reflect the diversity of real people?

Empowered Action:

Here, she gives actionable steps to create change:

  • Gather testimonials from clients of all sizes
  • Show diverse bodies in your sample work
  • Run inclusive model calls
  • Build safe spaces and communicate clearly
  • Use session questionnaires to understand consent and boundaries

Other Lessons I Found Valuable

Creating a Safe Space

Teri breaks down how to support your client through:

  • Pre-session questionnaires
  • Boundary-setting
  • Verbal consent
  • Emotional support
  • Empathy during the shoot
  • Clear communication before sharing images

Posing for Emotion, Not “Flattery”

She encourages photographers to focus less on “looking smaller” and more on:

  • Taking up space
  • Storytelling
  • Movement and fluidity
  • Confidence
  • Presence
  • Connection

Angles & Storytelling

Teri explains how angles communicate emotion:

  • Photographing up → power, strength, confidence
  • Photographing down → softness, vulnerability
  • Negative space → loneliness or vastness
  • Filling the frame → intimacy and boldness

This helps photographers think beyond beauty standards and toward storytelling.

What if we let go of "flattering" and focused on FEELING.

Beauty standards have taught us that we have to wait for our bodies to change before we are worthy of confidence, love, desire, and value… but it does not have to be that way. Our job is to remove the stress and anxiety of a portrait session as much as possible.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

I highly recommend this masterclass to any photographer who wants to elevate their client experience and adopt a more empathetic, inclusive approach to photography.

This course is perfect for portrait photographers, boudoir photographers, brand photographers, and anyone looking to create a more welcoming experience for clients.

She invites us to ask ourselves:

  • How can I empower you?
  • How can I tell your story?
  • How can I help you see yourself with love?

It’s a powerful reminder that photography is more than technique. It’s connection, presence, and humanity.
