A Day at the Miami Book Fair With Claudia Castillo: Stories, Creativity, and Unexpected Connections
The Miami Book Fair has always been one of my favorite celebrations in the city. Every November, the streets around Miami Dade College turn into a vibrant maze of books, artists, creators, families, and voices from all over the world. It’s a place where stories live in every corner... not just in the pages of books, but in the people you meet, the conversations you fall into, and the unexpected moments you carry home.
This year, I experienced the fair in a different way. I was there to document a woman whose story carries a weight and tenderness that deserves to be held with care: Claudia C. Castillo, author of Symphony of the Soul: 8 Tools for Finding Joy After Loss, and life coach at Chateo del Corazon.
Claudia simply wanted to be present, to walk through the energy of the event, connect with people, and let herself be inspired. And as her photographer, I had the honor of following her through the fair, capturing her essence in the most human, unscripted way.
Claudia: The Heart of Our Day
Walking with Claudia through the fair felt like witnessing the living spirit of her book. Symphony of the Soul is a gentle guide to navigating grief and finding joy on the other side of heartbreak. One of our first memorable stops was Casa Balam, a booth filled with handcrafted treasures inspired by Latin American culture. Their work radiates tradition: crochet, textiles, colors, and textures that awaken childhood memories of home, family, and heritage.
Their pieces aren’t just decorative. They feel like love stitched into form so it shows that storytelling isn’t limited to words. Sometimes it’s woven into the fabric of handmade toys, or passed down through generations of craft.
Casa Balam feels like an emotional mirror. Their creations carried the same spirit of intention, memory, and heart.

David & Kathy: Cooking With Fire and Joy
We met David and Kathy, authors of French Flambé Cooking at Home. If Casa Balam represented tradition, David and Kathy embodied joy... the kind of joy that comes from feeding people, experimenting in the kitchen, and turning meals into moments.
Their cookbook celebrates the art of flambé — dramatic flames, rich flavors, and the playful excitement of cooking with confidence. They spoke with passion about food, family, and the importance of savoring life. Meeting them was a reminder that creativity takes endless forms, from words to fire to recipes passed lovingly from one plate to another.
Claudia connected with them instantly. And watching them talk, I felt this beautiful thread between all three creators:
healing, culture, creativity, and the simple desire to bring more beauty into the world.
What the Book Fair Gave Us
This day at the Miami Book Fair was about presence, about walking through a space full of stories and letting those stories touch you.
It was about finding inspiration in unexpected places:
